IU PPR Biotechnologies Research Group broke new ground and received the first European Patent (EP 2 995 627 B1) that includes Istanbul University as one of the rights holders
The patented work titled “Synthesis of nanoparticular gene carrier systems based on chitosan” is academic member of IU Faculty of Engineering Department of Chemical Engineering Asst. Prof. Mehmet Koray Gök’s doctoral dissertation study named “Obtaining natural and synthetic biocompatible polymeric nanoparticulate gene carrier systems and examination of transfection efficiency.”
The European Patent, which is achieved with the efforts of the Istanbul University PPR Biotechnologies Research Group, proved this study to be a global discovery in the field of nanobiotechnology. With the project, nanoparticle systems that are as effective, cheap and natural as many imported gene carriers can be produced in Istanbul University for use in human and animal health studies such as gene transfer, gene therapy and cancer therapy.
As a part of the multicenter work carried out within the scope of the thesis, newly modified chitosan based nanoparticle systems were synthesized and characterized. This nanoparticle system has been shown to have the ability to form a complex with plasmid DNA, to be highly efficient in gene transfers in human standard cell lines and animal fibroblast cells, and to be employable as a biocompatible gene delivery system.
The study has been carried out with the consultation and secondary consultation of the Founding Members of PPR Biotechnologies Research Group, academic member of Faculty of Engineering Prof. Saadet K. Pabuccuoğlu and academic member of Faculty of Pharmacy Prof. Erdal Cevher; and cell transfection studies have been carried out by academic members of IU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Serhat Pabuccuoğlu and Assoc. Prof. Kamber Demir.
“Our University is an Important Building Block in International Competition”
Founding Members of PPR Biotechnologies Research Group, who are academic members of Department of Chemical Engineering, Prof. Saadet K. Pabuccuoğlu and Asst. Prof. Mehmet Koray Gök; academic member of IU Faculty of Pharmacy Prof. Erdal Cevher; academic member of IU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Prof. Serhat Pabuccuoğlu and Assoc. Prof. Kamber Demir presented the examined patent specification to IU Rector Professor Mahmut Ak on February 20, 2017.
Rector Professor Mahmut Ak stated that Istanbul University made great strides towards becoming a research university and said, “Our university, which successfully represents our country in scientific fields by producing value added projects, is an important building block in international competition. This is the best evidence showing us how we have collected the results of our work on patent documents. I congratulate all of our faculty members who have passed the test. There is no doubt that our university is going to continue making marvellous works like this one”.
